Vanity lights are light fittings usually placed in a bathroom, most commonly placed over a sink and above a mirror. They can also be placed on either side of a mirror. As the ‘vanity’ part of the name suggests, these lights have the specific purpose of illuminating a user’s reflection. Vanity lights are effectively task lights, giving clear illumination for make-up application, shaving or other grooming.
Bathroom vanity lights are typically wall mounted. They should be positioned as close to the face as possible, and to hit the mirror and reflect light without casting any shadows. To keep your bathroom design in proportion it would usually be recommended that a vanity light is not wider than the sink unit below it.
There are a wide variety of styles of vanity light available, from very simple and functional to modern and contemporary, or more elaborate and decorative. Vanity lights can be found in a variety of materials but metal finishes are some of the most popular and common.
A vanity light may use one long globe or several individual globes, depending on the design. We recommend LED fittings for vanity lights because of the high quality of light output and long lifespan.
LEDs are available in a range of colour temperatures available from a warm white (3000K) for a relaxing ambience to a cool white (5000K) which is closer to natural daylight. We would recommend warmer colour temperatures for bathrooms as these are more flattering.
LEDs with a high CRI (colour rendering index) will help render colours accurately which can be important when using vanity lights to apply make-up, for example.
Given the placement in a bathroom, vanity lights will often have a higher IP rating than general use lights for the rest of the home.
Vanity lights will be used alongside other light sources in a bathroom, such as spotlights. These will provide more of the general light for the space.
